7 Steps to Setting SMART Goals

Setting SMART goal is one of the keys to achieving lasting success in business and in life. Top-level athletes, entrepreneurs and achievers in all fields have set SMART goals. Setting goals gives you long-term vision and short-term motivation. By setting clearly defined goals, you can measure and take pride in the achievement of those goals, and you’ll see forward progress in what might previously have seemed a long pointless grind.

In previous blog posts, We have stressed the necessity and importance of setting goals in an effort to achieve extraordinary results. There are many ways to do that. But one of the most effective and proven methods is to set S.M.A.R.T goals. In order to work, SMART goals must be:

Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic
Time-sensitive

Here are 7 steps to setting smarter goals:

Step 1: State the Goal
Clearly state your goal in a positive and succinct way. Even if you aren’t 100% sure at that moment whether or not you can even achieve the goal, do not insert any “maybes” or “probablys” in your thoughts or statements on this.

Step 2: Set a Deadline
Add a deadline to your goal to enhance the clarity even further. This can be a particular date, a month, a year, or even a lifetime goal. If you don’t have a deadline to complete the goal, it will never happen. Life often gets in the way. Having a deadline also helps with procrastination.

Start with a few goals that you expect to attempt in the near future.

“I want to increase my monthly income 20% by June, 2020.” Or, to be more specific…

…“I want to increase my monthly income from $3,000 a month to $3,600 a month by June 2020.”

Step 3: Identify the Obstacles
Ask your family and friend to help you identify obstacles preventing you from achieving your goals. By recognizing the things that are in the way of a goal, you can figure out ways to overcome them. Don’t just go for the easy stuff. Push forward and take on goals with a few obstacles.

Step 4: Develop a Winning Team.
This team will support you in your efforts. Don’t pursue it alone. Identify the people, groups and organizations that can assist you in your quest.
For a weight goal, ask your doctor to help you. For improving your income, there are local finance groups and seminars led by speakers who have achieved a great deal of success, and are also willing to help others achieve their own success. Step 5: List the Benefits of Achieving the Goal
This is the fun part, where we can let the imagination run wild. List as many benefits as you can think of, and ask your team to help you achieve them.

Step 6: List the Skills You Need to Attain the Goal
This is a crucial step in achieving your goal. If you don’t have the skills needed to achieve a goal, pay someone to help you. This can help you save time and money in the long run.

Step 7: Develop a Plan
You have identified your goals, how they will benefit you, and a deadline to achieve them. You have identified your obstacles and assembled a team to help you.

Now, you must compile a detailed plan for your upcoming week, and how you are going to integrate these seven steps into your daily routine.
