In the sport arena, athletes have used coaches for centuries to win games. Today, you have the same access to a life coach who can help you achieve your goals. A professional coach, can give you new perspectives, tools, resources and accountability to accomplish your goals quickly and easily.
Here’re 7 tips that will help you hire the right coach or consultant:
1. Make sure that you need a coach: While we all can benefit from coaching, it’s not for everyone. You’ll benefit immensely from coaching when you need it and when you can fully engage in it. In coaching as with most everything else, results are based on individual effort. If you are ready to pull your sleeves up and get to work then coaching is for you.
2. Know what you want the coach to help you with or ask the coach to conduct an assessment of your needs: To save time and money, identify 1-3 goals you want to achieve. If you don’t have a specific goal in mind, ask the coach to help you identify up to 3 goals to focus on during the coaching. It is very difficult to get results when there is no specific goal to work with. You don’t want to get on coaching treadmill, make sure you know where you want to go and what you want to accomplish.
3. Find a coach who will be dedicated to you: The right coach will listen to you, tell you the truth and hold you accountable. For example, I had a client who hired me to help her move forward in her career. She felt stuck and could not understand why she was not getting promoted in her company. As I listened to her and got to know her better, I realized what the problem was. The problem was not a lack of self confidence as she thought; she just did not enjoy what she was doing. As we worked together, I helped her realized her true passion and held her accountable to take proactive steps to pursue a career in a field she’s passionate about. A year later she had her own business and she was as happy as can be. Make sure that your coach is able to listen not just to your words but also to your heart.
4. Find a coach who has experience in the area of your needs: One of the things you can do immediately is to visit the prospective coach’s website and read about them. Review their testimonials to see what others are saying about them. Review their credentials to see how much experience they have. For example a lot of my clients hire me because I have 20 years of experience in helping people transform their lives. If someone is looking for personal transformation, then I would be an ideal coach for such a person and that would become evident as they review my website.
5. Ask for references and check the references: Here’s another thing you can do, ask for references and make contact with the people provided. Ask the prospective coach if he or she has a coach. In my experience in the fields of coaching and counseling, coaches often have coaches. Therefore, you can ask the prospective coach who have coached them and contact their coach as a reference.
6. Get a written contract: An absolute must!
7. Only hire someone you feel comfortable with: It does not matter how successful the coach or the results they’ve achieved with other people, if you don’t feel comfortable with them, their method will not work for you. Listen to your gut feeling, if you don’t like them, don’t hire them.
