Why do we get angry? 3 Ways Our Emotional Triggers Can Actually Help Us

“Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly.”
—Proverbs 14:29

We know from last week’s blog that anger is a natural and normal emotion. Anger helps us survive by arousing our fear and heightened awareness of potential danger.

Left unresolved, though, anger creates an intense desire to destroy something. And when anger becomes destructive to you or anyone else, or when it has a negative effect on your personal, emotional and professional well-being, you must find a way to de-tox that negativity, by discovering your triggers.

Emotional triggers are thoughts, feelings and events that seem to “trigger” an automatic response from us. The word “trigger” implies that our reaction to these emotional sparks is automatic and involuntary. Actually, this reaction, like everything else that we do, is a choice. Learning how to identify our personal emotional triggers is the first step to taking control over whether we react, or more effectively, respond to these triggers.

“When my husband finally stopped asking me ‘What’s wrong?’ in response to my overall general negativity, he started to ask, ‘Why are you so angry all the time?’ I never thought of it as anger, but after thinking about it, realized that it was. Simply being aware of my triggers allows me to recognize them and diffuse them before they manifest into anger.” —Jane Wilson

The most common triggers occur when you are:

• threatened or attacked
• frustrated or powerless
• feel like you’re being treated unfairly

How you process and interpret these triggers determines how you manage them.

“Quite often, simply changing your MINDSET will immediately allow your brain to shift from anger, to a more calming, positive and effective emotion.” —James Justin

3 Reasons why discovering your emotional triggers is vital

1. They help us identify problems or things that are hurting us
